The Discovery Workshop

For 8-11 year olds

It’s time for our older children to start embracing self-directed learning!

All children in this workshop must be able to read at a 4th grade level and must be ready to be self-directed learners.

Core Work

We’ll continue using a proven homeschool curriculum that learners can follow to teach themselves their core work. We’ll have options for ways they can help themselves if they get stuck.

This work via our gamification process should be done in 2 hours each morning.

Afternoon projects (Quests)

The afternoons will be for quest work, outdoor activities, or literature so their brains get plenty of work as they start to own their learning in a deeper way.

This age group now has a much more solid foundation in handling themselves in social situations. So now it’s time to expand upon their hero’s journey so they develop the grit they’ll need for the next workshop.

Their Hero’s Journey

Discovery Workshop Sample Daily Schedule

8:30am: Drop off & play time

9am: Socratic Circle

9:15am: Core work

11:45am: Lunch & free time

1pm: Socratic Circle and begin Quest work

3pm: Clean up workshop

3:15pm: Closing group

This schedule is flexible in our learning design. Time blocks can be moved around based on the workshop’s needs. Within each work block, learners choose from a broad range of learning options based on their personal goals, interests, and other commitments. Most of the time, we will break tasks down into 25 minute pomodoro technique blocks so children have plenty of brain breaks and chances to move their bodies indoors and outdoors!

“Children should be educated and instructed in the principles of freedom.”
